Especially on home pages, having a slider is very helpful. We use the popular, tried & true nivo and flex sliders for simple smooth and easy sliders, and our own flash burns banner for more complex animated sliders. For nivo and flex you can choose the change effect, the time each slide shows for, and the time the between animations take, and more! For the burns banner you have control over everything from the zoom, the panning, caption text (and caption colors and background colors and opacity) liquid effects, bokeh and particle effects, and more!
